The Greek physician and pioneer of systematized medicine Hippocrates (c. 460 – c. 370 BC) already considered wine as an integral part of a healthy diet. He recommended its use as a disinfectant on wounds. He experimented with the different types of wines to see which ones would work best on different ‘pathos‘. He also considered wine a good base to mix other drugs into, in order to make them more palatable. He prescribed wine as a cure to specific ailments such as diarrhea and pain during childbirth. (Reference: page 433 of The Oxford Companion to Wine (third edition) by Jancis Robinson (2006), Oxford University Press).
“Wine is an appropriate article for mankind, both for the healthy body and for the ailing man.” Hippocrates (c. 460 – c. 370 BC)
Who am I to disagree with Hippocrates?
Must be true!! (and the guy lived long, 90 years if you looked closely… not bad for the around 400 B.C. era)
