Year 2015 has gone by, and one thing is for sure: the topic of wine hasn’t gone any smaller on social media.
I’ve got another news for you as we start the new year, the importance of social media for wine is not going to decrease in 2016 either.
More and more wine drinkers, producers, and marketers join the fun of sharing wine knowledge and information, or simply some wine fun on all social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and many more. It’s exciting to see, and amazing to be part of.
Like in every sector of society, we know that paper wine publications, magazines, guides, books, and long-established critics are loosing ground and influence in favor of everyday-life wine bloggers and anonymous wine reviewers.
But who is now most engaging in the wine world of social media?
Who is active, entertaining, educating the masses, and sharing on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and the other platforms today?
It is actually a difficult thing to measure.
We published last year, in March 2015, a list of the then-current Top 20 Wine World-Influencing Personalities on Social Media based on the Klout.com score. The Klout score’s formula to measure people’s and media’s influence is a secret, controversial, and surely isn’t perfect. But since we published our last list nearly a year ago, no one seems to have stepped up and created a better metrics. We’ve contacted the Influencer Management Platform Traackr.com to help us get further insight but they haven’t been reactive. The social intelligence tool VinTank doesn’t make a wine influencers list public either.
Social Vignerons’ 2015 wine influencers list proved very popular and helpful to many wine lovers in search of social media wine action.
In the fast-paced world of media, an update was due though. We’ve therefore assembled for you again the list of 2016 Top 20 Wine Influencers below.
To make your life easier, the links in the table will get you directly to everyone’s websites and social media pages. So browse around and out for yourself whether you like the content or not.
Instagram has gained much attention as a major social media platform, so we have now included the followers’ figures into our Top 20.
What’s changed since the 2015 wine influencer list?
Things change quickly on social media. This is what we’ve noticed, comparing the above 2016 list to the 2015’s:
- The Aussie Wine Wankers‘ work and effort on social media for informing and entertaining the world of wine is ever-more noticeable and noticed
- This very website Social Vignerons, greatly benefitted in fame and popularity from being awarded 2015 Best New Wine Blog
- Decanter must have been working hard and well on social media entering into the #5 position
- Relentless and successful blogger Madeline Puckette of Winefolly.com also joins the Top 20 with a well-deserved 7th spot
- Cathrine Todd and John Corcoran also joined at rank #17

Some Info about the Klout Score:
Klout website provides some of the answer with analytics ranking its users according to their online social influence. The ‘Klout Score’ is an aggregate of more than 400 signals coming from eight different networks. It aims at measuring how much people interact with the content produced by each user on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Tumblr and else. The number of followers is almost irrelevant in the Klout score. What matters are how much the content is liked, shared, commented on, engaged with. So it gives an indication of the user’s influence and interaction with the wine community.
Klout score can go changing overtime based on social engagement around each account. This is particularly true around the 72 to 74 marks. The table above is a capture made a few days ago. Scores and followers’ figures, therefore rankings, may have varied slightly as you read this post.
