We’ve all seen wine experts and connoisseurs swirling frantically their wine before tasting.
But why do we do this?
If you’re not a wine expert yourself, you might be wondering.
In this February 2016 article for Vivino, I shared my insight winemaking and wine chemistry knowledge to explain in every detail the point of swirling wine before and during a tasting.
The swirling technique is a very important gesture and part of a proper wine tasting.
Not only does it gives you time to appreciate the visual and aromatic qualities of a wine, but more importantly it modifies the chemical composition of the beverage.
Through agitation and aeration, moving the wine in the glass allows to reveal its characteristics. You will be able to make the most of and appreciate things like the grape variety, the wine region, and more.
Like taking time to enjoy and savor your food, knowing how to taste wine properly increases the enjoyment, the pleasure, the fun, and that’s the main point really!
