Score: 87/100
This D.O.C. wine from Bruno Rocca is made from 100% Barbera grapes coming from the village of Neive, more specifically the Crù Currà and Crù Fausoni.
This is obviously from the Piedmont (or Piemonte) region of Northern Italy.
Soils there are filled with limestone and blue marl.
The average age of vines is around 50 to 60 years old.
The wine was vinified in stainless steel tanks before being aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes:
It is quite shy on the nose for a 14% alcohol wine.
On the other hand, it does feel fresh, with a lightly minty character surrounding dominating red acidic berry notes. Some pepper accentuates the light spiciness, while very discrete touches of earthiness and cocoa provide a very moderate depth to the nose.
Mouthfeel is well balanced, quite smooth as far as tannins are concerned, but with a dominant acidic feel. Slightly green on the finish while most of the palate is filled with ripe fruit sweetness and caramel tones.
Overall
A ripe well executed Barbera, with a dominant acidity that is typical of grape. It’s spicy, with solid yet discrete fruit characters, quite light-bodied, and very precise aromatically.
