Score: 94+/100
Dominio de Cair is the latest winery (Bodega) built by Juan Luis Cañas in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain.
Tierras de Cair is almost the highest expression in Dominio de Cair’s range, at least the highest I have been given to try, although the producer makes an even rarer verylimited wine from extremely old vines called Pendón de la Aguilera.
For this Tierras de Cair 100% Tempranillo wine, grapes were sourced from old vines that are over 70 years of age.
After hand-harvest, grapes went through a double sorting table to eliminate any vegetal debris, before fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
Maturation takes place in 100% new French oak barrels for 24 months.
So how good is 2010 Tierras de Cair Reserva ?
Tasting Notes
This is a very dark red wine, with an astonishingly dense color. Check out the video if you haven’t yet to find out how dark it is. It is black, with red and purple hues, looking fresh and immaculate like a baby, on steroids!
The nose though, is very elegant and sophisticated.
Vanilla, ripe red berries, wood ashes and smoke, and a clove spiciness come out of the glass but discretely, like they’re shy. This is a relatively young wine after all, keeping its magic and wonders for itself a little here.
The palate reveals why this relative shyness. This is a wine with astonishing concentration of tannins, yet they’re utterly smooth and silky.
As you put the wine in your mouth, the wine fills your palate entirely with its great body, oily texture, and a wealth of super-fine tannins, literally like silk.
Dark cherry flavors, sweet spices, and a fair bit of well-integrated oak. There is so much life and concentration that has been put into this wine.
But again, this is a super-star of a baby wine waiting to be revealed over time. It will become such a singer with an extraordinary voice and a whole fascinating story to tell. Yet, so far, it feels like an immaculate baby that’s got everything it needs to succeed.
This is a wine of absolute composure and quality. Six years in already, and yet tasting so young. This is built to defy time and built to only reveal the genius fruit that has obviously gone into making it in a decade or two.
I could talk indefinitely about all the combined finesses and power this wine will develop over time, as I can project it from what this Tierras de Cair is saying today. But we’re only at the beginning of the story here, as this baby can barely talk much so far, keeping its talent for itself at this stage.
Bulk buy and store as much as you can. This will only go upwards and upwards! Outstanding as it already is!
Enjoy
