Von Elk Company is a Finnish business that specializes in producing wine-based drinks, established in 2013.
The owners are Theodor Arhio and Juha-Matti Raunio
The product:
Glöet is a spiced sparkling wine flavored with mulled wine spices and fruits.
Its recipe was developed in co-operation with Mr Antti Rinta-Huumo, a wine aficionado famous in Finland. Glöet combines Spanish sparkling cava with the seasonal flavors of mulled wine (more precisely gluhwine in German and glogg in Nordic).
With flavors of tangerine, lemon, cinnamon, raisin, vanilla, clover and ginger, it is manufactured by Custom Drinks in Coruña, Spain.
This creates a new type of product that is to be served chilled: a cold mulled wine!
At this stage, it is available only in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, and Luxembourg.
So what did we think of Glöet?
Tasting Notes
Glöet sparkling wine comes in an intense color, the exact same color as the packaging covering the bottle, a bright, intense, and reddish pink.
The intensity of the color though, is actually nothing compared to the intensity of the aromatic profile.
Explosive herbal aromas jump out of the glass: clove, sandal wood, geranium, cactus. It’s not dissimilar to smelling a flavorsome gin.
Those are complemented with some fruity notes: citrus peel primarily, potpourri, and discrete red berry tones.
The palate is somewhat balanced with some body and a good acidity, yet on the very sweet side of things for a wine.
Overall
A very unusual preparation for a wine drinker, Gloet is more of a sparkling wine-based flavored cocktail.
Powerfully aromatic, with precise and clean flavors though, it is perfectly well-made and delivers what it promises on the label.
Given to taste to a group of people including wine lovers, many did find it very enjoyable and pleasing.
Worth a try if you like herbal and sweet drinks.
Enjoy 🙂
