Score: 89/100
This Crémant de Bourgogne, a Burgundy sparkling wine made by Champagne producer Moutard is, as its name indicates, made from 3 different local grape varieties in equal proportions: 34% Pinot noir, 33% Chardonnay, and 33% Aligoté.
Like the Champagne by Moutard called Cuvée 6 Cépages by the same producer is the finest expression of the winery’s savoir-faire (know-how) with Champagne fruit, this 3 Cépages is the finest sparkling wine Moutard produces from Burgundy fruit.
So how good does Moutard Crémant de Bourgogne 3 Cépages taste like?
Tasting Notes
This bubbly comes in a bright lemon-yellow color with some intensity. It’s bright and shiny with some gold hues.
The nose is fragrant and fresh, filled with plenty of primary Chardonnay fruit flavors of lime and lemon, and a touch of tropical: fresh pineapple. It smells lively and zesty, while clear buttery and leesy, toasted hazelnut notes, provide depth and roundness to the smell. Some sweet spices and white pepper confirm we’ve got here the aromatic profile of a rather serious sparkling wine.
Put it in your mouth and this impression is confirmed. Solid acidity reveals the good concentration in this wine and confirms its livelihood, bringing the fresh lemon and citrus flavors to a frantic life on your palate. It is dry as a Brut ought to, but sugars are clearly perceptible, and they underline the fruity approach and lusciousness of the citrus fruit character.
Bubbles are fine, smoothening up the palate sensation together with a good oily texture, and opening up the way to a long finish on leesy notes of toasted nuts, spices like nutmeg, and some buttery vanilla.
Overall
A sparkling wine that feels complete from all the fruity elements it brings, its lively acidity combined with delicate bubbles, and good depth and complexity.
Perhaps it is a little too sweet with a slightly too high a dosage for purists and for claiming the most sophisticated food pairings. We would love a Brut Nature version for that!
But this will make it more approachable and enjoyable to most palates and most occasions, the sugars bringing up luscious citrus and the tropical fruit goodness that many should appreciate.
An approachable yet serious sparkling wine from Burgundy then. A wine to experience…
Enjoy 🙂
