Musso is a famous winery located in the village of Barbaresco in the Piedmont wine region of Italy.
Their iconic wines include a series of single vineyard Barbaresco wines made of the Nebbiolo grape, but they also produce a variety of more affordable beverages showcasing the diversity Piedmont has to offer: Langhe Freisa, Barbera d’Alba, Roero Arneis, Langhe Chardonnay, and Dolcetto d’Alba to name but a few, and the Langhe Nebbiolo reviewed here.
The Nebbiolo found around the town of Barbaresco is widely planted throughout its extensive hillside landscapes. The grape verity produces wines under the Barbaresco DOCG appellation, but it can also give Nebbiolo wines destined for earlier release and enjoyment under the more generic Langhe Nebbiolo denomination.
This Langhe Nebbiolo by Musso is made from grapes grown in vineyards in the locality of Ronchi, in the municipality of Barbaresco, where the limestone and dense clay soils face East, namely the “sorì” (top of the hill) in the morning.
The wine was aged for 7-8 months in in large Slovanian oak barrels.
So how good is Musso Langhe Nebbiolo?
Tasting Notes
This Nebbiolo comes in a rather dark color for a Nebbiolo, not too dense but dark with both some orange and purple hues.
The nose is firstly very fruity, with ripe fruit notes of plum and prune liqueur mainly. Some sour cherry in there too. It’s elegant and provides a warm feeling with sweet spices, some old oak notes, slightly oxidative. Upfront fruity with some depth on the smell.
Putting it in your mouth, the wine strikes with its lively acidity that brings up to life the sour cherry aromas smelt on the nose, and transforms them into juicy zesty cherry flavors that dominate the palate.
The prune liqueur is still there offering a comforting and pleasing feel. Sweet spices, vanilla, everything pleases in this wine, like a good Christmas pudding, except that it comes with cherries!
Good body gives it roundness; it’s dry but the ripe fruit tones add richness; tannins are smooth and discrete to start with but finish on a granulous drying feel which makes you salivate positively and suggests it will go well with food.
Overall
A serious upfront fruity Nebbiolo, offering very comforting fruit and spices characters, with lively acidic cherry flavors.
Add some moderate complexity and some depth, and you end up with a serious wine that makes it very likable: approachable yet with serious matter to it.
Enjoy 🙂
