For 2017 Valentine’s day, (I know, 14th of Feb was 1 week ago, I’ve never been good at being ready for the D-day), the family-run Champagne house Gremillet announced a special edition Champagne cuvée, with a customizable label.
Essentially, you could have the name of your loved one written on the label or she or he would feel even more special enjoying the bubbly. Nice elegant idea!
Because my #1 love (that is publicly known) is my passion for wine and for my passion-sharing outlet: this very website Social Vignerons, I had the label customized to the name of my blog…
But how good Gremillet Valentine’s Day Special Cuvée, and should you be ordering cases for next year?
In one word, I tend to think the answer is: YES!
This is very smooth and fruity approachable Champagne, yet refined with all the quality attributes you’d expect from the famous French bubbly.
This is a dry sparkling wine, clearly in a rather dry Brut style, but well balanced by the right amount of sugar. It will certainly go wonders with any subtle dish you’ve prepared (or ordered for your loved one).
The nose is floral (that’s good for Valentine’s day), with notes of elderflower and rose (nice!!), but also spicy and nutty, with ripe citrus fruit tones providing elegance and depth.
Bubbles are super fine, while the texture is oily and generous. The ripe citrus notes explode on the palate into rich ripe lemon liqueur flavors, like a subtle and dry limoncello.
The blend seems clearly oriented towards the approachability of Pinot Meunier, that always makes for luscious fruity upfront Champagnes.
But the serious winemaking and obvious well-thought blend selection has also provided here with depth, minerality and character.
I haven’t had a chance to taste other wines by Gremillet yet, but clearly this is a cuvée most palates will appreciate for its smoothness, approachability, and refinement.
Perfect for a day in celebration of love then…
Enjoy -)
