This is a wine made from Tempranillo in the region of Castilla y Leon of Spain by Grupo Pesquera, famous winery and produce of the iconic Tinto Pesquera from Ribera del Duero.
This wine was particularly interesting to me for tasting, and bringing back memories, as I was working in the same area of Spain (province of Zamora) back in 2008 while I was a winemaker in Toro.
I also remember regularly having this wine back then, as it was locally acknowledged as one of the best value wines of the region
Tasting Notes
This Tempranillo from the Eastern part of central Spain comes in a dark and quite intense red color. It’s black to the core, red with hues of orange to the rim, showing just little signs of evolution despite its nearly ten years of age!
The nose is powerful and aromatic, filled with ripe plum, almost prune but it’s not overripe as fresh dark cherry populate the nose too.
More importantly, there’s a combination of spices and herbs, and meaty juiciness to the smell.
Imagine being sipping an intense red grape juice next to a smoking barbecue full of herbal and spicy meat and you’ll get a feel for what this red smells like.
Simply appetizing to the nose!
The palate reflects this combination of rich fruitiness with the juiciness of herbal flavors and peppery spices.
Sweet and savory it is, but dry with some residual sweetness from the perceptible warmth of the alcohol one feel to the finish.
Granulous but smooth tannins, dense but bot overly so, drying and salivating to the finish.
Loads of richness, intense flavors and a wealth of food-friendly character in this wine.
Pair with meats, barbecues and spicy dishes. So many facets in this hearty Spanish red, it will content and tease the interest of any lover of approachable sweet and savory old world red.
Enjoy 🙂
