2014 Laurent Miquel Vérité Viognier Grande Cuvée, Pays d’Oc IGP, France
The Vérité Viognier Grande Cuvée by Languedoc producer Laurent Miquel made from a single south facing vineyard on the winery’s own estate, recognized for the quality of its fruits and named Saga Pegot.
After night harvest and pressing, 70% of it is fermented in French oak wine barrels.
This Viognier white wine from Languedoc comes in a bright and shiny lemon-yellow color, with gold hues accentuating the shiny effect and providing good intensity to the appearance. Just looking at it, you can tell some oak must have gone into making this wine.
It’s even more obvious on the nose. From the first smell, your senses are immerged in a sea of creaminess, nuttiness (toasted hazelnuts), and vanilla.
There’s plenty of gingerbread spices too, underlining the wine’s fruity richness.
It’s scented with honey, confit pineapple, and slightly cooked apricot (compote). Add some strong date aromas to it too, and lemon peel. So, it’s like a Christmas pudding that would be filled with gorgeous juicy fruit characters.
Complex, deep and vibrant it smells, fresh and fruity overall despite the fruit aromas being very ripe ones and a solid presence of oak.
The palate is on the same line, powerfully flavorsome. It’s a big burst of flavors of all sorts: oak, spices, definite smokiness, rich jammy citrus, some tropical as well as fresh stonefruit (yellow peach and apricot). It’s all superbly blended and well freshened and sustained by a good acidity.
A dry, creamy, and delicious ripe and fruity Viognier of a wine, just like what we expect and love from this grape.
Its built-in natural balance between body and solid fresh acidity has allowed this baby to take on a lot of nutty and spices from its fermentation and ageing in oak, resulting in a harmonious complexity.
This white wine is packed-full of salivating flavors: hazelnut, gingerbread, citrus jam, pineapple and more. More importantly, in spite of the powerful aromatic profile, the whole feels fresh and vibrantly fruity.
Lively it is, dynamic, and with characterful and concentrated personality.
