Score: 90/100
This organic red wine by Tenuta di Ghizzano comes from vineyards in the town of Peccioli, in the Pisa province of Tuscany, Italy.
It is a blend of 70% Sangiovese with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Grapes were hand-harvested before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats.
Here is how the producer describes the concept behind this Veneroso wine: “This is the historical and most representative wine of the estate. It was first produced in 1985 and since then its elegant, ripe fruit and mineral content has interpreted the characteristics of the soil where it is born. Made mainly from Sangiovese with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, it has become a point of reference for the winegrowing area where it originates.”
The winery produces 25K to 25K 750ml bottles depending on the year/vintage.
Tasting Notes
This organic Tuscan red wine comes in a bright red color of medium intensity. Brightly red it is, a little dark, and with slight purple hues making it look fresh like a dark cherry just picked off the tree and after a bite.
The nose here is quite intense. It is dark filled with torrefaction notes of dark cocoa and toasted bread, but also dark spices such as black pepper, clove, and sweet spices.
The second dominant note in the aromatic profile is the fruitiness: dark cherry again, but also fresher berries like raspberry and blueberry.
Put the wine in your mouth and it is all confirmed. We are here with a rich and powerful red, with well-integrated oaky flavors of vanilla and powerful spices (like clove). More importantly, the primary fruit characters do shine through amplifying the spiciness with touches of vegetal peppery characters, also providing berry-like freshness.
Like for the other wine by Tenuta di Ghizzano I tasted, and simply called ‘Il Ghizzano’, the standout feature here is the juiciness and purity of the fruit character. Although this ‘Veneroso’ carries a little more weight and tannins, more depth and intensity too.
Absolutely enjoyable to drink now to make the most of its gorgeous fruity character. It will certainly evolve well over the next 3 to 5 years accentuating spiciness and savoriness, perhaps complexity.
A wine to enjoy with juicy meats, grilled and herb-scented barbecues, rich stews, or tasty cheeses.
Cheers 🙂
