Dominio Campo Viejo is a special cuvée from Rioja, Spain by Bodegas Campo Viejo, only made in great vintages to showcase the best fruit and wines produced those years.
It is a blend of 90% Tempranillo, with 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo fermented in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature around 25ºC. The maceration on skins is extended to approx..28 days before an 11-month ageing in selected French oak wine barrels coming from two high-quality forests in France: Tronçais and Bertranges.
Tasting Notes
This Rioja red comes in relatively dark red color, not super dense, but deep and intense enough to be appealing and intriguing to look at.
The nose displays vibrant aromas of fresh strawberry and ripe cherry, a fruity edge dominating the profile. Dark cocoa and clove/nutmeg spices deepen it. It is quite tight to smell at this stage, let’s not forget that this is a very young wine, by Riojan standards.
The palate is dense and quite powerful, with weighty tannins (in a good way) and a smooth velvety texture. The good acidity underlines fresh red berry fruit flavors, while a burst of peppery spices hits your sense on the mid palate. Dry and quite savory, with juicy berry notes and vanilla/caramel from the oak discretely sweetening things up a little.
A Riojan wine in a modern, concentrated style built for ageing, 5 to 15 years.
