Score: 90/100
This Roussillon white wine by famous local producer Maison Cazes, is a blend of 60% Grenache Blanc and 40% Marsanne grown on pebbly gravels that reflect the heat accumulated during the day, helping grapes ripen at night and reach the required level of ripeness.
The wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel tank to preserve the primary character of the fruits.
Tasting Notes
This Roussillon white comes in a rather intense lemon-yellow color, with some amber gold hues suggesting it’s been in contact with oak.
The nose is subtle and elegant, dominate both by sweet honey slightly waxy aromas, together with a heap of fruity stone fruit notes, apricot and yellow peach. The whole is elegant and intriguing to smell at, so sweet smelling with this honey notes that are rare in young dry wines at this level of intensity, but at the same time feeling restrained and fine. You just want to dig in and find out what it tastes like…
While the nose suggested a sweet wine, it is actually clearly a dry one, although it appears super smooth and mellowed. There is a solid acidity for a wine from this warm area in South of France. But the wine is balanced by a distinctive oily texture, and more importantly a sweet feel from plenty of fruity apricot and blond raisin flavors.
The honey is also strikingly present on the palate all the way to be the dominating note to the finish. But we’re here with a floral and fine honey note, fresh honey just out of the beehive it tastes like. Surprising, but rare and good.
Overall
A very distinctive white wine in a unique style. Round and smooth, it is also dry and crisp, delivering plenty of controlled stone fruit and honey flavors in an unusually pleasant harmony.
A wine to experience then it is, given you like on paper, the notes described in these notes.
Enjoy 🙂
