How Good is Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Les Sétilles Chardonnay ?
Wine Review of 2015 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc Les Sétilles, Burgundy White Wine, France
The “Sétilles” cuvee by famous Puligny-Montrachet Burgundy producer Olivier Leflaive, was named after the cadastral name (Historical map records) of the place where the Maison Olivier Leflaive winery is based.
This regional appellation Burgundy Chardonnay is a blend of about 60 different vineyards located around the villages of Puligny and Meursault, on calcareous clay and silty clay soils.
After pressing, the must (grape juice after pressing) was fermented in stainless steel tanks, then matured for 15 months in total (including 5 months in stainless steel tank): 2/3 the blend in oak wine barrels (whose 13% of new oak barrels, the remainder being used barrels), and 1/3 in stainless steel tanks.
This white Burgundy comes in a lemon-yellow color of medium intensity, with some gold hues making look shiny and appealing.
The nose is very typical of the grape variety in its region of origin. It’s bright and shining with aromas of lemon and floral notes of elderflower, coated in sourdough brioche and delicate sweet spices, a touch of toasted hazelnut too. Pleasing and tempting to smell at, delivering a clear and precise aromatic profile with finesse.
Likewise, the palate is sharp from a vibrant acidity, rounded up by an oily texture. The whole dry yet round balance make the layered citrus, stonefruit, spices and elegantly oaky flavors shine with elegance and precision.
Salty mineral phenolics, leave a velvety texture to the finish, with an appetizing salivating salty feel.
A vibrant and precise Burgundy Chardonnay, filled with all the concentrated goodness we like in the style, the bright citrus, the comforting buttery feel, and the deepening sour dough, nuts and spices all harmoniously balanced in an elegant crisp Chardonnay.
