Wine Review of 2016 Fiegl Winery Collio Sauvignon Blanc, Italy
Score: 87/100
This Italian Sauvignon Blanc wine is from the Collio DOC area of Friuli Venezia Giulia in North-Eastern Italy.
Fermented in stainless steel tanks, it was matured on its lees in the same tank until bottling.
Tasting Notes
This Northern Italian Sauvignon comes in a rather pale lemon-yellow color, with hints of green hues.
The nose features a medium aroma intensity, dominated by fruity sweaty passion fruit, orange, lime, and litchi notes. There is certainly a vegetal edge to it, like acacia leaf and blooming paddock grass. With a touch of reductive character initially, tinned asparagus notes, the wine opens up with time. Open a good half hour before serving.
This is a dry Sauvignon Blanc, with crisp acidity, although there are some perceptible residual sugars balancing the sharpness out, and underlining the tropical fruity flavors. Phenolics provide a bitter edge to the finish, somewhat like the bitterness you taste out of lime of lemon peel.
Overall
A fruity and quite flavorsome Sauvignon Blanc, displaying a variety of tropical and citrus fruit characters, lifted white pepper spiciness, in a dry acidic sweet/savory feel.
A white wine to pair with food, antipasti or creamy seafood dishes sound like the perfect pairings for it.
Enjoy 🙂
