Sparkling Wine Review of Corvezzo Winery ‘Shake It’ Unfiltered Sur Lies Vino Rosato Frizzante (semi-sparkling), Veneto, Italy
Score: 88/100
The ‘Shake It’ Rosé by Veneto winery Corvezzo, is certainly a curiosity and a wine in a rarely seen style.
Firstly, it’s an organic wine, and even a vegan sparkling wine, that comes with a relatively low 10.5% alcohol!
It is also Frizzante, that is too say semi-sparkling so less effervescent than your average pink bubbly which is why it comes with a relatively standard cork and no cage around it. Just a string nicely tied around the bottle neck, just in case I guess!
It is then made from 100% red Raboso grapes. I don’t think you see many of these around.
Even more surprising, is the fact that was refermented in the bottle itself, and that it comes with the lees inside. Thus, it is actually recommended to ‘shake it’ before you pour!
A rare sight in a wine (see it in video below, noting that the colors in the video do not really give the wine justice as it looks less orange and more elegantly pink in the real world).
Finally, as my tasting notes below highlight, this is in fact a very dry, crisp and salivating, a food-friendly wine for connoisseur, yet easy-to-sip and approachable.
The aromas and flavors it features are delicate and zesty.
Clearly, this is a class of its own…
Worth experiencing to find out what you think.
My Full Tasting Notes
This lightly sparkling Italian rosé comes in a delicate and bright, slightly pale and slightly salmon pink color. Bright and shiny it looks, before you shake it that is!
After you do, it does appear hazy, yet keeping a delicate and quite glamorous a pale pink color with hints of orange hues.
The nose appears, straight away, very vibrant and fruity, bursting with pungent and lively dominant grapefruit characters.
Lime and pears are also clear, augmenting the fresh fruity goodness. It smells somewhat like a crisp and fragrant Prosecco wine. Although, hints of pomegranate and blueberry aromas remind you we are here with a rosé made from red grapes and not a white bubbly.
The wine is clearly dry, very dry in fact on the palate, with a crisp acidity underlining the freshly squeezed lime juice flavors. Being a frizzante, the less fizzy Italian version of a sparkling wine (the more sparkling being ‘spumante’), bubbles are scarce and delicate.
The relatively round body, and the overall creaminess of the texture, perhaps provided by the contact with the lees in the bottle, make for a balanced experience, on the zesty, dry and crispy side of things. Some velvety phenolics add an interesting and salivating slight bitterness to the finish, for an even more mineral feel.
Just like on the nose, flavors are clear and lively, bursting with citrus, pomegranate, sour cherry and hints of grassy pepperiness, like green pepper somewhat.
Overall
A super interesting, lively and zesty very dry rosé sparkling wine. Super crisp and refreshing, with plenty of sour and citrusy flavors, it enchants with its unique dryness and its salivating grassy slightly bitter finish.
A bubbly that sips with ease, being light in body and alcohol, it’s refreshing and cries for being paired with tasty entrée dishes and Italian antipasti. Basil, capsicum, dried tomatoes, or pine nuts come to mind as the base ingredients for elaborating the perfect pairing with this animated Frizzante.
A sparkling wine that offers not only the fun and rare experience of having the shake the bottle before opening to ‘mix’ the lees (see video), but also a wine providing a really interesting dry and zesty tasting experience…
Enjoy 🙂
