While visiting the Douro region of Portugal, where all the grapes for all Portuguese Port wines are grown, I discover a lighter alternative to the —otherwise delicious— red Ports.
For a summery day in the Douro Valley, where temperatures can get quite high, needless to say that a white port and tonic cocktail is more refreshing than their red and often quite sweet and tannic counterparts.
A good way to drink Port wine, and enjoy the taste of Portugal, without the weight and the red-stained teeth!
So, how do we god about preparing a White Port & Tonic Cocktails?
There’s hardly any cocktail preparation that is simpler than this!
White Port & Tonic Ingredients:
- Ice as needed
- 1/4 cup white Port (60 ml)
- 6 Tbs. tonic water (90 ml or say 1.5 times the volume of white Port)
- Lemon or lime wedge for garnish
- Mint Leaves to taste
How to prepare White Port & Tonic?
Directions:
- Fill with ice cubes, a wine glass (preferably if you’re wino and you still want to smell and taste better) or a cocktail glass
- Add the white port first
- Top with the tonic water as indicated above, but pour to taste really!
- Stir to mix
- Garnish with a lime/lemon and mint leaves – You’re Done!
Note: the white port and tonic cocktail pictured above was prepared with Dow’s white port, which worked quite well. It’s relatively light, filled with honey and tropical notes, not too sweet.
