Brancott Estate is a pioneer winegrower of the Marlborough region and one of the main wine producers of New Zealand’s South Island.
Brief History
As early as 1973, they planted the first grapes at Brancott Vineyard against the local belief that the South Island was too cold to cultivate grapes. They planted their first Sauvignon Blanc in 1975 and released the first ever Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in 1979.
We all know how popular the style has now become on the international stage, and how the region proved ideal for what has now become New Zealand’s iconic grape variety.
The producer has since continued to explore the potential of Marlborough region, being the first to plant Pinot Noir.
More recently, an ancient Bordeaux grape variety, Sauvignon Gris was planted allowing the grape to know a revival with the first Marlborough Sauvignon Gris released in 2009.
In 2011 at the occasion of the Rugby World Cup hosted in New Zealand (and won by the All Blacks!), the ‘Brancott Estate’ name was adopted globally, replacing Brancott in US and the ‘Montana’ brand in other countries.
Brancott has now become one of the largest wine estates in Marlborough, and New Zealand in general, with wines found in more than 50 countries and on all the main worldwide wine markets.
Michael Cooper wrote in the Second Edition of his Wine Atlas of New Zealand (2008 – Hodder Moa): “Nearly 15 percent of the country’s entire grape crop avalanched in 2007 into Montana Brancott Winery, near Blenheim”, giving an idea of how significant the producer is for NZ.
