“Patrick Farrell MD MW and I (and Andre Ribeirinho, Fabien Lainé, Magnus Reuterdahl… to mention just a few) have started to carry this heavy bunch of grapes. We named it “#winelover against cancer – #WLBCAF”. Now we need you to help us carry it, as it will become heavier and heavier…
#WLBCAF: #WineLover Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation, is self-explanatory. We will exist to raise awareness among #winelover-s for breast cancer. Early detection is still the best solution, so we have to make sure that every #winelover woman knows that.
Why?
For the #winelover group, breast cancer has become very personal as one of the members has been having a very difficult time with the disease.
What we’ve come up with is a non-profit group to raise awareness about breast cancer in the world of wine.
Patrick Farrell has written the first installment that is really just a brief overview (see it here http://www.winelover.co/chapter-1/) as to what we plan on researching and discussing. This is one the things he had to say: “Trying to explain the genesis of this #Winelover Breast Cancer project (that Luiz has lifted off the ground like Atlas) takes a little perspective. Beyond the studies, I was struck by the number of women wine professionals who had come down with breast cancer, some of whom were dear friends. I was tempted to write a few articles then but shied away from doing so as to not creating any blame on them for the disease. This must be emphasized that our project is to inform #winelovers and in no way to blame or shame our friends or loved ones who have this condition. “
Our plan is to inform #winelover-s (within our group and from the world of wine at large) of risks and then how to balance those risks with the health benefits to be garnered from moderate wine consumption (less coronary artery disease, stroke, macular degeneration among a few).
We’ll also explore healthier drinking patterns and solicit ideas from our readers, friends and colleagues as to how best to share this information, as well as to how best to lend emotional support to those that we love who have had breast cancer become part of their lives.
October is already the month for breast cancer awareness and will be the perfect timing to start ours with a series of events in Sicily, Italy. These events will be connected via internet with other major cities where #winelover-s will also be able to participate.
Please show your support by sharing it and, super important, go show you have a good heart and donate by getting the new #winelover t-shirt here: http://winelover-store.myshopify.com/collections/tshirts
Thank you so much!
Luiz Alberto,
Founder of the #winelover community“
