This was very interesting reading along with great graphics. On a recent trip to the Alsace wine area, I was intrigued by the wood barrels, many that had decorative pieces of wood on the barrel head. The purpose seems to be to provide access to the inside of the barrel but also gives the cooper a chance to be creative by carving these blocks of wood. There is an interior tapered plug that is pulled tight to the head by means of a wingnut pressing against the decorative piece that I am inquiring about. Also, some were eleborate brass castings instead of wood. Do these parts have a name in the business and do you have any informative tidbits to add? For instance, how do they install or remove the plug since it is larger than the bung hole?
One last question, do you know of any cooperage shops that offer tours? As a woodworker, I would love to see how the barrels are made. In fact, I would love even more to particpate in a class of barrel making!
Thank You,
John Kraft

Hi Donald, tx for stopping by. I'm not sure, what do you want to compare it to?
The number of hoops doesn't really make the quality of the barrel, the quality of the wood, its origin in particular, and the species of oak make the difference, French oak vs. American or Hungarian oak, finesse of the grain, the forest it came from, the cooper, etc.
