In reply to <a href="https://socialvignerons.com/2017/08/01/what-is-mateus-portuguese-rose-wine-worth/#comment-1397">Mac</a>.

Thanks for stopping by Mac, and for taking the time to comment :-)
For other readers, and for the context, the 'Vin de Poop' is the 'Vin de Merde' whose review article is here http://socialvignerons.com/2016/05/25/nv-le-vin-de-merde-truly-shit-wine-france/
Indeed, that may seem surprising!
The score I give to wines aims to be an absolute representation of the quality of a wine on the grand scheme of things, in the whole world of wine, relative to other wines. How concentrated the wine is, how well it's made, how much of a wine it is, length, comcplexity, etc...
I try to remove my personal hedonistic taste from the score but simply put it on a more absolute scale.
Therefore: I quite enjoyed Mateus and think it's a relatively pleasant wine, but its concentration, and distinctive expressions are quite minimal. It's a mass-produced wine with simple flavors, despite being enjoyable.
On the other hand, I much disliked the 'Vin de Merde' from a personal taste's perspective, in particular relative to its price tag. Yet, its concentration, body, and dinstinctiveness in absolute place it at 83/100. It has no fault in absolute, although I personally found its overall balance rubbish for my palate. Simpler reds with a score of 80/100 might be more enjoyable to my taste, because again this is not a hedonistic scale.
Some people might enjoy the 'vin de merde' more than I did (we all have different taste and it's important to respect that) therefore it wouldn't be fair to hammer it score-wise. Yet, I doubt anyone could argue that it's worth much more than 83/100, say 85/100 if you're generous. I don't always throw out a personal opinion about wines I review (most often not, at least not as strongly as I did here). But in this case I though it was important given the price tag and the wine's peculiar name.
Hope this makes sense?
Cheers :-)

My Pleasure Diego :-)
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your momeries. Indeed, they make a Vinho Verde wine. I will have to review it someday for the blog too, should be interesting. Cheers :-)

I had Mateus quite a few times with my now wife back in the 80's, brought back memories.
Our tastes in wine have evolved since then, but I wouldn't mind having a glass now. They also had a white vihno verde if I remember well.
Tks for the article.

THanks man, a nice article and great perspective on the History of the wine, what it meant to people, and why it now comes in such a bright pink color highlighted by the transparent bottle, as I think my pictures highlights!?! :-)
Our posts are pretty complementary so it's nice to have a link to your post here. Mine says how it actually tastes like :-) Cheers

Mateus Rosé was such a key part of teenage British wine drinking in the Seventies. It was also Saddam Hussein's favourite drink!
