Score: 90/100
This red wine from the North-end of the Languedoc wine region, or the Pic Saint Loup appellation to be precise, is an organic wine, blend of 60% Syrah with 40% Grenache.
After fermentation and a 30-day maceration in tank with regular pigeages (punch downs of the cap), the wine was aged in stainless steel tanks before bottling.
Tasting Notes
This Pic Saint Loup red comes in a pretty dark red color, dark and intense red to the core, nearly-black, intense, and shiny red to the rim with purple hues betraying the very young age of the wine at the time of this tasting.
The nose is also youthful, filled with plenty of fresh fruit characters, fresh berries, blackberry, red berry, and raspberry. There are also cooked fruit notes, cooked apple and cooked banana. Yet, it feels vinous overall, a touch of earthiness, and a little spicy pepperiness. A rich and round ripe fruity nose altogether.
Likewise, the palate tastes round and oily as soon as you put it in your mouth. Oily body is married to a good acidity, with a crisp minerality that underlines the fresh berry flavors.
Generous cooked apple notes though, are well reflected into the wine’s rich and oily texture, and the overall feel of (not excessive) ripeness.
From the mid-palate on, the tannins that initially felt smooth and discrete, reveal more and more of a grippy edge as you head towards the finish. These will certainly round up and soften with a year in bottle.
A very young wine at the time of tasting, still slightly decomposed into various fractions contradicting each other a little.
No doubt they will come together harmoniously in six months to a year’s time to form a very pleasant, characterful, fruity and spicy whole. From there, drink within 5 years (2018-2023).
Enjoy 🙂
