Vieilles Vignes is French for old vines, so wineries in France use this term to designate wines made from grapes sourced from old vines (vin de Vieilles Vignes)

Even though, there is no legal definition to what is a Vieille Vignes, so it’s up to every wine maker to decide how old vines need to be to be qualified as old vines or Vieilles Vignes.
Generally speaking, though, the Vieilles Vignes cuvée and wines are made with some of the oldest vines of one’s estate. Depending on the region, old vines can be 35-40-45-50 years old in cooler areas of France like in Bordeaux or Burgundy, while in the South where it’s drier and vines can age much further, Vieilles Vignes can designate vines that are 60, 80, or even 100 years old.
Vieilles vignes or old vines tend to produce much less wine per hectare, yielding less wine, therefore those wines are more expensive to produce, but the juice of these vines are more concentrated in flavors and tannins, making for deeper more intense wines.
