Dorsey tells us more about his vision for wine investment and why he’s chosen to be involved with this project:
“Tom Dorsey here. You probably know me from Wall Street, I co-founded Dorsey Wright & Associates 30 years ago and recently join the founders of Alti Wine Exchange.
These days we invest in anything that is listed on an exchange from commodities, individual stocks, to exchange traded funds. The listing on the exchange gives one comfort that the underlying vehicle he is trading is liquid, and therefore will have a bid and an offer for its price.
One of the commodities that now trade on an exchange is something everyone is familiar with, drink it, and invest in it, is wine. With the advent of the first listed exchange trading wine, it is possible to start a new business that most investors understand but never knew they could put a portfolio together of fine wines .
As an investor I am interested in diversification. I own equities, bonds, closed end funds, exchange traded funds and lastly something that is non correlated to the rest of the portfolio. I want to invest in a “real asset”.
Real Assets are commodities like gold, silver, real estate, hedge funds and the like. One of the most interesting non correlated assets that could be part of the portfolio is Fine Wine. This is not the wine you typically buy for enjoyment at your home. This wine has a limited number of bottles in existence.
This wine is for drinking, of course but with moderation because it is expensive so you could have a bottle sent to you for a tasting event like I have, or a celebration, but in general it’s for investment and storing .
Over the last 10 years, fine wine has been one of the best investments one could have had.
The world of wine today has so much to offer. Here are some tips as you start your journey.
Wine trading at the new Alti wine exchange is a way of finding an alternative method of earning money.
As a beginner wine trader you may already have a specific region in mind. I remember when I started as a Stockbroker at Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith. The learning curve was steep and the time frame before consistent commissions were was long, but after 45 years on Wall Street it was definitely worth the journey. Building a trading business at Alti Wine Exchange is a long road but it can be done in your spare time.
The love of wine comes first.
The rest of the equation is having a proper budget, resources, knowledge of the market, and persistence. You would be among the first. For me 45 years ago it was consistent cold calling. For you I surmise it would take knowing people who have a love of fine wine as you do.
Trading at Alti Wine Exchange is not the same as day trading obviously. It comes down to what you love. All fine and rare wine markets offer excellent profit potential. Wine investment is the trendiest business today.
As a wine investor you only need to display hard work and patience in marketing your activity.”
