This wine is part of the ‘Colombelle’ primeur range of wines by Plaimont which are released very soon after harvest. Hence, we are tasting here the 2016 vintage while many producers have just only finished picking the grapes.
Every year, the South West France producer of Plaimont releases a special edition in the range, the Colombelle Edition Limitée or ‘limited edition’ white with an original packaging.
For the 2016 Edition Limitée n°5, designers have come up with a bottle design using enamel to elegantly print a writing quill on it.
The blend is not communicated about, but chance are the traditional grape varieties found in that part of France (Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Gros Manseng, and perhaps Sauvignon Blanc) are used.
So How does this Plaimont Colombelle Edition Limitée 5 taste like?
Tasting Notes
One has to admit the packaging on this wine is particularly attractive for this wine with the transparecy of the bottle hardly interupted by any writing except for the big ‘Colombelle’ wine name and the quill (see bottle images below, without effect on the picture).
The wine comes in a bright lemon-yellow color, slightly pale with delicate green hues.
The nose mainly comes through as fruity with stewed and fresh pear, and passion fruit notes.
At swirling the glass though, strong grassy and peppery characters with some petrol to them take powerful control over the aromatic profile.
The palate is dry with a dominant zesty acidity. A nice oily texture and a tiny touch of sweetness balance the acidity out a little, not quite entirely though.
Flavors are those of citrus fruit: lime and tangy grapefruit. Some grassy passion fruit, with slightly vegetal phenolics to the finish accentuating the tanginess.
Overall
A good well-made dry white, technical even, filled with intense primary fruit flavors.
Dry, zesty, and tangy, it will pair well with appetizers (make them a little rich so they contain the wine’s acidity) and creamy seafood entrées.
