Score: 91+/100
This wine from Burgundy, France (Bourgogne) is made by Patrick Jacob-Girard, vigneron in the small village of Savigny-Lès-Beaune.
Patrick Jacob-Girard’s estate spreads over 8.5 hectares (21 acres) over the communes of Savigny and Pernand-Vergelesses.
This 1999 wine is quite obviously made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes.
Tasting Notes
This 18-year-old Burgundy Pinot Noir from the village of Savigny comes in a brick-red color of medium intensity, quite dark and dense for such a relatively old Pinot.
The nose sets the tone to an immensely complex world of aromas and flavors.
OMG, there is so much going on the smell: where do we start?
Despite the wine’s age, there is still a wealth of luscious fruit characters, and lively at that: juicy blackcurrant and vibrant raspberry. Add a touch of cherry liqueur providing some comforting fruity warmth and you’re in for so delightful fruit characters.
Truffle and forest floor of course there is in typical aged Pinot Noir fashion. Plenty of spices: fennel seeds, black pepper, clove and nutmeg.
Then also (I know, sorry the list is long, but it’s all in there, what am I supposed to do? 1, 2 aromas, skip a few?!?), plenty of torrefaction notes of dark cocoa and coffee, caramel.
Super-duper complex it is to smell!
The palate follows suit, with extreme complexity, delightful concentration.
Vibrant and brilliant acidity, smooth velvety tannins. It is actually quite dense for a Pinot, and feel comforting and ripe, fruity and spicy a little like a mulled wine, but better obvious.
Stunning level of refinement!
In all honesty, at this stage, I’m not hugely used to tasting very good aged Burgundy Pinot Noirs, so perhaps I’m easily impressed here.
But in all honesty as well, this is, 18 years later, absolutely gorgeous and enjoyable at a very high level of complexity, refinement and depth.
Enjoy 🙂
