About the Clos Marey-Monge
Clos Marey-Monge acquired its name back in 1795 when Nicolas-Joseph Marey and Émilie Monge, the son and daughter of eminent French nobility, fell madly in love.
Located over the heights of the Pommard village, the Clos Marey-Monge, a walled vineyard which is the exclusive property of Château de Pommard (a Monopole) is made of 7 distinct terroirs used to assemble this Pinot Noir.
The 7 sub-section of the vineyard, called Simone, Chantrerie, Les Paules, Grand Champs, 75 Rangs, Micault, and Émilie, feature distinct soils and microclimates.
Grapes from each terroir are hand-picked, fermented and barrel-aged separately, kept apart for 18 months. In the summer, nearly two years after harvest, the final blend is made, assembling each of the 7 elements in precise proportions.
Overall Tasting Impressions
A full and rather powerful Pommard Pinot Noir wine, filled with gorgeously-ripe fruity goodness, of the cooked and dried fruit type such as cooked apple and prune complemented by the more expected and familiar fresh sour cherry and red berry tones.
Loads of spices and superbly integrated oak make for a dry, juicy, spicy and somewhat savory whole, yet a round, fairly full-bodied experience for a red Burgundy.
The typical expression of a tight, precise and somewhat rustic Pommard, delivered with the abundance of a warm vintage, and the finesse from a perfectly well executed winemaking.
Full Tasting Notes
This Pommard red comes in a rather dark red hue for a Burgundy Pinot Noir, nicely dense to the core and filled with bright red slightly brown hues to the rim.
The nose is pungently fruity and spicy altogether. Surprisingly, and certainly, this is the fairly warm 2015 vintage being expressed. Tthe fruit character and aromas we’re experiencing here is one of warming ripe fruit such as plum, nearly prune, dark blackberry, and sour cherry liqueur.
Although, freshly floral violet flower scents and an abundance of white pepper notes ensure the aromatic profile remains lively and fresh. Juniper and honeysuckle, clove, delicate vanilla and spiced caramel provide immense depth and complexity to a delightful smell.
The palate is soft and charming, dry and filled with a vibrant acidity that makes the strawberry liqueur flavor resonate with the plum and sweet spices for a lively whole. Tannins are smooth at first but develop into a velvety, slightly edgy granulous finish. This will certainly smoothen up further with ageing.
Enjoy 🙂
