2015 Slurp Cabernet Syrah Red, Pays d’Oc IGP, France
Score : 85/100
This red blend wine is made by Château la Tulipe de la Garde, a winery situated between Saint-Emilion and the Dordogne River in the Bordeaux region of France and owned by Dutch rock star Ilja Gort.
It claims to be a natural wine. The label suggests an easy-going approach to it (see label images below): “Enjoy its ripe juicy flavours. Easily enjoyed anytime, just a great wine for a great price. This wine hasn’t flown halfway round the world which is better for the environment too. This wine is pure natural as well as gorgeous to drink.”
With a nice dark yet shiny red/purple color, this slurp smells very fruity and vinous, like a wine you’d do want to slurp indeed.
It does smell fruity and spicy like a wine made using carbonic maceration, like a Beaujolais Nouveau, but probably a bit deeper, and with riper darker berry fruit notes. The black peppery spiciness of the Syrah shines through as well.
The palate is perfectly aligned with the nose. It’s very smooth and fruity, with solid refreshing acidity that sustains both the fruity character, and the rich body texture.
Definitely lighter, heavier, and richer that a Nouveau but the appeal and approachability are there.
I have to admit this has a pretty good balance on the palate, with this solid density and tannic structure well matched by the acidity.
A very well-rounded fruity and approachable red, that surprisingly (or not) bears its name very well. I was a little less convinced by the name/wine match for the Slurp White and the Slurp Rosé, but I saw it clear here.
Dry and vinous like we (I) like and expect in a wine, it yet delivers an easy-going very approachable ripe fruitiness mixed with spices, some smooth tannins and body.
Everything then to make you want to slurp it and enjoy it indeed without complications.
