This organic wine by Tenuta di Ghizzano comes from vineyards in the town of Peccioli, in the Pisa province of Tuscany, Italy.
It is a blend of 95% Sangiovese with a 5% touch of Merlot to round it up.
Grapes were hand-harvested before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats.
Here is how the producer describes the concept behind Il Ghizzano: “This is the wine that “introduces” the estate into wine bars, wine stores and restaurants all over the world. It is made from Sangiovese grapes with a small percentage of Merlot, grown mainly in our “Santa Maria” and “Il Monte” vineyards. The philosophy behind IL GHIZZANO is that of offering consumers a fresh, fruity, easy to drink wine featuring all the sweetness of the local Sangiovese.” This is the wine that “introduces” the estate into wine bars, wine stores and restaurants all over the world. Tasting Notes
This organic red from the Tuscan coast comes in rather dark red color, pretty dark indeed to the core, bright red to the rim. Not super intense, but intense it is.
The wine’s aromatic profile on the nose, and the flavors on the palate clearly and purely displays three sides: fruit, spices, and a touch of welcome oakiness.
The vibrancy of the fruity aromas is much pleasing to smell. Fresh strawberry, as well and the jammy version are in there make it smell both fresh and lively, but also rich and ripe. Raspberry, as well as juicy dark cherry.
Peppery spices are there, with touches of clove and nutmeg. Combined with the jammy aromas, this gives the wine a feel of richness like a rich Christmas pudding that would be stuffed with gorgeous berry fruits.
The vanilla scents from the oak are not neutral in this story. They add depth, spiciness, but also toastiness that amplifies the festive and salivating feel.
Overall
An utterly juicy, ripe and spicy organic of a wine, displaying all that we love about a solid Tuscan red wine, with the extra dose of juiciness.
Rich and vibrantly ripe it is, filled with fresh red berry flavors, but the definite addition of complexity and spices from the oak has brought it to a whole other level of enjoyment.
Yet, the standout feature if the wine’s salty minerality and honest fruit expression and character.
