Wine Review & Tasting Notes of 2015 Giusti ‘Augusto’ Recantina Montello-Colli Asolani DOC, Veneto, Italy
Score: 90/100
The ‘Augusto’ cuvée by Giusti is a red wine made from the best Recantina grape variety picked on the estate’s tenuta Emily and Aria Valent vineyards.
The grapes are harvested in the first ten days of October and fermented, each vineyard separately, in stainless steel tanks before maturation in 2,5 T Slavonia oak barrels for a period of 12-14 months.
Overall Tasting Impression
A red wine that is somewhat disconcerting, in a positive way.
Very characterful and filled with opulent ripe and generous fruit character, it throws your senses in many directions thanks to its exhilarating spiciness and the complexity of its savory, earthy; and forest floor complex depth.
A wine for connoisseurs in search of something unusual and surprising, yet something good and deep, balanced, generous, concentrated and flavorsome with its own unique character like we love to see and taste coming out of Italy.
Full Tasting Notes & Wine Review
With a dark and opulent dark red color and plenty of intensity in its appearance, this Recantina wine boasts very ripe and powerful aromas of dark berries, blackberry and dark cherry, on the edge of being jammy but without getting there, or feeling overripe or heavy.
This is obviously a wine made from very ripe grapes bathed with plenty of sunshine, and you can tell just from sniffing at the glass.
More importantly though, in spite of this fruity richness, the wine’s nose feels savory, thanks to just-as-powerful yeasty/soy aromas, pungent clove and black pepper, and a distinctive dried-meat/charcuterie character.
A captivating aromatic profile, combining opulence of fruit, with earthiness and umami-like spicy and deep richness. Certainly intriguing!
The palate bursts with a juicy (and again meaty) acidity) that balances the medium-to-rich body feel. Flavors are certainly abundantly spicy. Hints of green wood, a heap of black and green pepper, a wealth of caramel and dark cherry.
This is a complex wine in a dry acidic style yet featuring a rich velvety tannic texture and oily body.
Enjoy 🙂
