Bernard Magrez announced yesterday the acquisition of yet another Bordeaux wine estate, this time in the Pessac-Léognan area South of Bordeaux: Château Le Sartre.
Bernard Magrez, in Brief
Unlike many land owners in the wine industry, Bernard Magrez, 80, did not inherit his properties from previous generations. He started with nothing more than his raw energy at the age of 22 when he got hired by a wine merchant in Bordeaux.
It is in 1981 that Magrez acquired his first Chateau, still his flagship estate to this day: Château Pape Clément, a Grand Cru Classé (1855 classified growth) of the Graves (also Pessac-Léognan in fact).
Since, one acquisition after the other, Bernard Magrez has extended his ‘empire’ and finds himself at the head of over 40 estates spread around the world, including the four Bordeaux classified growth at Château Pape Clément, Château Fombrauge, Château La Tour Carnet, and Clos Haut-Peyraguey. He also owns wineries in the South of France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, or Chile. Magrez’ own vineyards are said to cover over 850 hectares in total (2000+ acres).
Château Le Sartre, Pessac-Léognan
On 13th December 2017, Bernard Magrez announced the new acquisition of a 33-hectare wine estate: Château Le Sartre.
Chateau Le Sartre is located just South on the town of Léognan, neighboring famous wineries of the area such as Chateau de Fieuzal and Domaine de la Solitude.
The winery has been producing about 140,000 bottles of wine per year. Magrez announced he will continue producing a red and a white as is typical in the Graves:
- A Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot red blend sourced from about 23 hectares (57 acres) of Le Sartre vineyards
- A Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc white blend from the remaining 10 hectares of the properties vines (25 acres).
